Paint for porches and decks?

Oil-based paints offer moisture protection, but are high in volatile organic chemicals (VOC) that can cause eye and respiratory irritation. They're affordable and cover more surface area per gallon than water-based paints. These paints are best for covering metal surfaces, such as railings, porches and terrace finishes.

To clean brushes and rollers, you will need a solvent, such as paint thinner or turpentine. You will need to be very careful and use personal protective equipment. Because they are designed for outdoor use, most roof paints contain additives to protect the platform from mold, mildew, UV rays and extreme temperatures. The purpose of the deck cleaner is to remove accumulated dirt, debris, mold or algae that would prevent a smooth and durable bond between paint and boards.

Oil-based roof paint is most commonly seen with transparent floor stains and requires mineral spirits or paint thinners to clean brushes, sprayers and tools. The opacity of the cover paint will determine what part of the grain and the appearance of the wood are visible once treated. Acrylic roof paints are often formulated for horizontal applications, with the understanding that this means that the surface will be exposed to feet, furniture and elements. Only time will tell how any decking paint withstands months of UV rays and the elements, but my initial opinion of the INSL-X is that it offers a durable, non-slip surface at an attractive price.

To reduce this risk, paint all sides of the deck boards, including the bottom, if possible to seal the wood and prevent moisture. If you paint a terrace before the chemicals evaporate, the paint may not stick and crack and peel. With more than 30 years as a painter, I recommend buying the best roof paint on the market, which will save you time and money. Humid and rainy climates contribute to the paint on roofs not looking good, because if moisture seeps into the wood under the paint, it can loosen the bond between the wood and the paint and cause it to peel off.

If you're still in doubt, try a small amount of cover paint on an inconspicuous section of the platform and see how it resists the elements. But what we didn't know was what paint was used both on the roof (rails, sides and posts) and on the front porch. I brushed coat after coat of several different brands of roof paint on terrace boards purchased specifically for testing.
